As much as I love most of Dykosaur’s stuff, the constant “you’re not really a queer, go away” is really starting to piss me off.

First up, if you don’t think that a straight, cis person having the shit kicked out of them because people think they’re a “fag” isn’t a victim of homophobia, then I don’t want you on my team. Gays who think that are incredibly damaging to the movement, and, to be honest, with that degree of empathy they’re probably not people.

damn I didn’t even know people paid attention to my tumblr. Pretty sure no one ever said that wasn’t homophobia, but a straight cis person being the target of that behavior is NOT the same as a queer and/or trans person having the same experience. I can’t tell you how many arguments I’ve gotten into with “allies” about how they ~know what it’s like to be queer~ because they get shit for being allies/people mistake them for being gay. I don’t think anyone will pretend it’s not a shitty experience regardless of actual sexual orientation, but to act as if it is the exact same as an actual queer person’s experience of it is privilege-denying. Here’s why:

a straight cis person who is the target of anti-queer sentiment is more likely to get help from authority/justice figures (god that’s awkwardly phrased)

a straight cis person’s actual identity is not under attack; a queer person’s is. If a straight cis person is the target of anti-LGBT violence or harassment, they have the comfort of knowing that they are actually straight and cisgender. At the end of the day, they know they are not queer/trans, and that makes it much easier to deal with. If you’re actually queer and/or trans, your identity is being attacked. Your very being is being attacked. And you can’t escape it. tl; dr: Straight cis people have straight and cis privilege.

I completely agree that there is a difference between an LGBT person getting attacked for that, and a straight person getting attacked for perceived LGBT-ness. But attacking straight people for complaining about homophobic attacks against them, as you did, isn’t simply noting that difference: it’s trying to diminish their experiences. Personally, I think those kind of attacks are wrong no matter who’s targetted.

Secondly, the continual “if you’re asexual you’re not queer” repeat is ridiculous. If you’re going to be conservative in your use of language, then a queer is strange, gay is happy, and lesbian is a native of Lesbos.

I notice there have been several low-libido people or repressed people or Other Untrue Ace Stereotype people chiming in saying that they can understand because they know what society tells people who don’t have sex, too. And they can, to a point, but the main harmful message of “you are not a human being, you are broken and wrong,” is not being received, which is what makes me so frustrated by their accounts.

About the repressed people saying “oh, I know how society treats asexuals because I was pretending to be asexual to hide from my real sexuality”—it’s bigger than that, because the biggest things about being asexual for me are the things society tells us about what we can and can’t have—long term relationships, emotional intimacy, real connections. And the things that society tells me I’m not—fully human, fully capable of connecting to other people, able to be a real and fully functioning adult.

And if you know you’re not REALLY asexual, that you can throw it off any time you want as long as you accept your REAL orientation, that… doesn’t get at the heart of what it’s really like to listen to those things that our culture is telling to people who are actually asexual, because you know that you’re not. It’s much easier to shrug off “sexuality is a fundamental part of being adult” when you know that you experience sexual desire for people, even if you think you can’t handle that yet—because you know that they’re not really talking about you. Those of us who are actually asexual don’t have the option of doing that, because they are talking about us.

Pretending temporarily to be asexual because you can’t deal with being gay or bisexual or whatever is not the same thing as being asexual, knowing that you’re asexual, and internalizing all the negative shit society says about actual asexual people.

And the other thing is that I don’t get flak for being asexual for only as long as I pretend it’s a phase, a temporary state, that I’m existing in a state of potential attraction and unformed sexuality. When I’m not claiming my sexuality as a real thing, people don’t care about it. It’s only when I say “look, this is me, and I don’t anticipate changing, I’m not going to structure my life around the possibility that a person will magically suddenly make me totally attracted to them” that people start getting angry and looking for ways to devalue my identity. It’s only okay to be asexual as long as you’re quiet about it and as long as you accept that it’s only a phase. Once you say “no, this is actually part of my adult self, and I don’t see it changing” society starts coming down hard on you.

So no. People who say “I was asexual and people didn’t make a fuss about it”—were you out as asexual? Did you publicly say “this is me and I do not see that changing?” Did you ever talk about it, or did you just try as hard as you could not to draw attention? Did you ever try taking up space?

The multimillion-album-selling alternative rock outfit has thrown its weight behind Alive and Well, an “alternative AIDS information group” that denies any link between HIV and AIDS. In January, Foo Fighters bassist Nate Mendel helped organize a sold-out concert in Hollywood to benefit the group. Foo fans were treated to a speech by Alive and Well founder Christine Maggiore, who believes AIDS may be caused by HIV-related medications, anal sex, stress, and drug use, and implies that people should not get tested for HIV nor take medications to counter the virus. Free copies of Maggiore’s self-published book, “What If Everything You Thought You Knew About AIDS Was Wrong?,” in which she declares “there is no proof that HIV causes AIDS,” were also passed out to the concert-goers.
